Michele Buckman has put together some videos discussing the current DC market and what the future may hold for the real estate market in the Washington DC area.
Banks have become much more generous in the amount of money they will lend homebuyers. It’s tempting to take the full amount they’ll lend, and buy that big house – but you don’t want to get stuck with a house you may not be able to afford in the future. When buying a NW DC home, you will want to consider how much home you really need.
Consider the size of your family and your family's lifestyle. If your family enjoys entertaining and playing in the back yard, a condo will not be your style. If your family is small, and you go out often for fun, a big house with a yard will not be the best fit for you. One thing is for sure: if you don’t have the time or the means to care for a large home and yard, you’ll regret owning one.
If your family likes being home, and you like to cook or entertain frequently, you will need a house with a large kitchen that has a lot of storage – such as tall cupboards, an island, and a good-sized pantry. Gourmet appliances will make cooking those family meals so much nicer. However, if you eat the majority of your meals out, and are only home to sleep, a smaller kitchen will do.
If you have family members who visit often (or who might move in) you will want to add a guest room or suite to the number of bedrooms your family requires. Also, if you entertain large groups, you will want to have a bathroom on the first floor – or the floor wherever the family room is located.
